Big Eddy Recreation Area Bio-Engineering Demonstration

Big Eddy Recreation Area Bio-Engineering Demonstration - Upper Deschutes RiverHENDERSON professionals provided design-build public recreational area rehabilitation services to Deschutes County, USFS, ODFW, and private recreation interests in the restoration design, permitting, and re-construction of the Big Eddy Recreational Area trail/boater pullout on the Deschutes River.  Big Eddy is a popular, highly-utilized public area along the upper river section which receives over 45,000 recreational rafters and kayakers each year.  Increasing public recreation use of Big Eddy has resulted in the serious degradation of the public trails, recreational boater pullout, river embankment, and surrounding wetland areas.

HENDERSON’S work included constructing riparian bioengineering structures to reestablish bank-full flood-prone areas and restore adjacent riverine wetlands, installation of in-water boulder structures to direct flows away from embankments as well as to provide recreational boater anchorages, native plant material cuttings for embankment protection and plantings, and construction of a public ‘soft’ trail for controlled public access to Big Eddy.  HENDERSON staff also helped coordinate volunteer efforts by the Upper Deschutes Watershed Council and local boaters.
